SUMMER CAMP
CULTURELAB: 2009 Summer Art Camp

INVESTIGATE THE ARTES OF THE AMERICAS! DISCOVER! CREATE! LEARN! RELATE!
Investigate the diverse cultures of the Americas in the Museo’s Culture Laboratory! Expand your knowledge of the artes and speak a little Español too! Younger students will discover Latin American history and traditions while taking part in activities that are creative and educational. Older students will be given more in depth and challenging projects that will blend historical and contemporary ideas.
Students may register for half or, Full day classes. Minimum of 8 students. Students who enroll in full-day workshops may bring their sack lunch for a half-hour supervised lunch and activity for an additional $20 per week. CLASS SCHEDULE
Week I
June 15- 19, 2009
ELEMENTARY
Fee: One-half day: $150/ Member $125, Full day: $275/ Member $220
Weaving
9:00am– 12:00pm
Visit the world of the Mayas, Aztecs, and Incas through the ancient art of weaving. Students will wash, cord, and spin natural wool fibers and create colorful dyes from various plants and herbs.
Clay
12:30pm– 3:30pm
Pottery vessels are an integral part of any ancient culture. Students will learn about various clays found in Latin America and will create their own earthen pottery by using early hand-building techniques such as pinching, coiling, and slabbing.
MIDDLE SCHOOL AND HIGH SCHOOL

Mural Art
9:00am– 12:00pm
Work with a professional muralist in the style of Diego Rivera. Students will learn the art of calligraphy and contemporary mural making as they walk through the neighborhood with Jeremy Ulibarry on a mural crawl and then create their own large-scale art.
Papier-Mâché
12:30pm– 3:30pm
Explore playful and colorful mask making in the Latin World. Students will create Aztec and Mayan animal masks made of paper mache, build Puerto Rican Vejigante masks, and learn about Mexican Alebrijes.

ELEMENTARY

Paper Story
9:00am– 12:00pm
Explore the Aztec culture with ancient Codex books that documented their way of life. Students will design and create their own Codex book with hand made paper and personalized binding.
Festivals &Papier-Mâché
12:30pm– 3:30pm
Explore playful and colorful mask making in the Latin World. Students will create Aztec and Mayan animal masks made of paper mache, build Puerto Rican Vejigante masks, and learn about Mexican Alebrijes.
MIDDLE SCHOOL AND HIGH SCHOOL

Cartooning
9:00am– 12:00pm
Learn the techniques of the hot art of cartooning with Jeremy Ulibarry. Students will design a new character and use their imaginations to create a new super hero on a fantastic adventure.
Contemporary Art II
12:30pm– 3:30pm

Monstruos y Dragones. Students will design wild and wonderful creatures by learning how to draw claws, scales, wings, and more. They will also take home a sketchbook full of imaginary characters and a full-sized poster of their favorite!
Traditions
12:30pm- 3:30pm
Enjoy the rich cultures of the North, Central, and South America through art. Students will make a variety of crafts from Southwestern Tin Retablos and Guatemalan Worry Dolls to Mapuche Jewelry and Huichol Yarn Painting.
MIDDLE SCHOOL AND HIGH SCHOOL

Forum Theatre
9:00am– 12:00pm
Act and improvise with in-demand artist Gwylym Cano. Students will work in teams as they write their own plays based on the techniques of the Teatro, Oppressed. (Students are encouraged to sign up for the second week as well.)
Mural Art II
12:30pm– 3:30pm
Study the work of Mexican muralists Orozco, Rivera and Siqueiros. Local muralist, Jeremy Ulibarry, will lead this workshop while students create their own grand scale art. Students who attend Mural Art I may also enroll!

This is the opportunity to work with filmmaker Gwylym Cano, a local digital filmmaker. Students will learn various techniques of digital filmmaking by creating a short film each day.
