Museo de las Americas has established itself as an invaluable resource for teachers and students. Museo offers culturally charged interactive tours and workshops connected with our current exhibits and school curriculum. The following workshops are aligned with the Colorado model Content Standards and integrate core areas such as science, math, social studies, history, literacy, and visual arts. Workshops are offered year round and are facilitated by licensed teachers/maestros(maestras) trained in culturally responsive approaches to arts integration.
The deadline to submit your request is two weeks before your chosen date of the workshop.

CULTURAL ART WORKSHOPS:
Cultural art workshops are available all year round to students of all grade levels. Workshops can be conducted on-site (at Museo) or off-site (at your school).
Amazon Culture: (K- 4)
Aztec Calendar: (5-12)
This ancient stone proves to be more than a simple calendar once you unravel the secrets hidden deep within the carvings. Students will analyze the symbols of the Sun Stone and discover its ancient secrets.

Aztec Masks: (P-4)
Throughout History Latin American cultures have utilized masks for a variety of reasons. Students will discover the many uses of ancient masks and will construct their own Aztec mask.

Feather Art: (K-8)
Students will learn the significance of birds and their feathers to ancient Latin American civilizations. There is more to a feather than its beautiful colors and its function; there is the magic of flying!

Guatemalan Textiles: (P-8)
Students will experience the beauty of Guatemalan textiles through images of "huipiles," "cotes," and "tzutes." They will learn new vocabulary words as they listen to the legend of the "worry doll" and create their own doll.

Inca Quipu: (5-12)
Quipu is a system of tying knots used by the ancient Incas to communicate, count, and record history. Students will experience the Quipu system by constructing their own Quipu.

Indigenous Foods of the Americas: (5-8)
The Americas have contributed many recognizable food products to cultures worldwide. Students will study how trade between the new world and old world changed the diets of humans worldwide.

Mayan Sky: (5-8)
Students will learn about important astrological events through Maya storytelling and apply their knowledge by creating their own Mayan zodiac symbol.

Murals and Diego Rivera: (9-12)
In this hour and a half workshop students will experience the life and art of Diego Rivera, a well known founder of the Mexican Muralist movement. The students will construct a mural that depicts current events that impact their lives today.

Tortilla Press/Printmaking: (5-12)
Students will study the humor and political satire in the prints of Guadalupe Posada. Using a traditional tortilla press students will create prints using the relief technique and construct their own broadside advertisement.

Cinco de Mayo: (P-4)
Participants will view a 6 minute film created by elementary school students entitled, "El Milagro de las Tortillas." Students will use corn tortillas to recreate a traditional ancient codex or favorite scene from the film.
El Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead): (P-12)
Students will celebrate Day of the Dead by honoring their ancestors and decorating a sugar skull as a personal remembrance.
Exhibition Workshops: (P-12)
With each exhibition, Museo offers a unique workshop that relates to the ideas, themes, or techniques in the current exhibition.

Target Latino Connections Workshops:
Target and Museo will offer 68 free workshops to Title I school during the 2011-2012 school year, September 2011-May 2012. These workshops were designed for pre-school thru fourth grade students.These workshops can be conduct on-site (at Museo) or off-site (at your school). Limit of four workshops per school.There are four workshops to choose from. Workshops will be scheduled on a first come, first serve basis. The deadline to submit your request is two weeks before the workshops date.
Wildlife Habitats of the Americas:
Students will discover what animal characteristic are needed in order to survive in the various habitats of the Americas.

Amazon Plant Life:
The Amazon Rainforest -- "the lungs of the world" -- houses the Earth's largest collection of living plant species. Students will identify what factors guarantee the survival of these plants and discover the importance of preserving this remarkable environment.

Three Sisters:
The story of "The Three Sisters" -- corn, beans, and squash -- teaches the importance of Native American horticultural traditions and diet. Students will learn the legend of the sisters along with the planting method.
